Here are some easy SEO tips that you can implement right in your post editor.

Headings

  • Ever wonder why books are easy to read? It’s because they use headings, which make them organized.

Bold or Italicize

  • A good rule of thumb is to bold or italicize to emphasis ideas.
  • This also makes your article skimmable, since everyone is always in a rush these days.

Tags

  • Think about what keywords people would use when they use your search bar on your site. Basically, this is an alternative to your topic title.

Category

  • Choose one category only. Why? Because your website will only insert one category into its permalink.

Spacing

  • It’s easier to read text when it has plenty of white space.
  • Our minds are lazy; whitespace makes us think that we’re progressing.

Short sentences

  • Short sentences are easier to understand.

Permalinks

  • Don’t use stop words such as “the” or “and”.
  • This counts towards your keyword density, so better make sure that your target keywords are there.
  • Google permits characters to only 55 characters.

Yoast plugin

  • Input the keyword or keyword set you’d like to rank for.
  • Rewrite your meta description so that you mention your keyword once (mentioning it twice makes it look spammy).

Links

  • Cite your sources! Not only does google like this, but your audience will also appreciate it and will make you believable.

No-follow tag

  • If you cite a source where you are unsure if they are ranking (or may have spam attached to them), it’s better to no follow them so that bots will know that they shouldn’t count that link towards your domain grade.

Bulleted list

  • A big paragraph of text is scary to read. Why? You want your readers to find what they are looking for on your site. If they can’t find what they’re looking for, they’ll leave.

Images

  • If you can, add images to your articles to help explain concepts. You can also create an image that shows a quote from your writing for simplicity.
  • Can’t think of an image? Create an image quote. This will increase time on page.
  • Don’t forget to put your keyword in alt-text too!

Conclusion

As you can see, the goal is to optimize everything for the users, not just for the bots. Why? Because the longer they stay on your site, the more Google will see that people have found what they’re looking for. That is Google’s ultimate goal – to make sure that they find the content that is most useful to whatever keyword is typed into their search bar. It’s not hard to put SEO in articles, really. All you need to do is to keep these things in mind and watch your traffic increase.

I use the Yoast plugin and highly recommend it. I do have trouble with writing lengthy sentences. That is something I need to work on.
